Well, my answer is definitely biased since I am an ME. I think any of the ones you listed would be great job outlook wise. Engineers are always needed and I have had no problems getting internships and now a job lined up. The pay isn't bad either.

About mechanical engineering, I really enjoy it, designing things and then going down to the machine shop and making it is really awesome. We have CNC mills and lathes that you can get certified to use if you're an ME, a bunch of manual stuff too, but I stick to the CNCs for the most part.

I never really liked electrical, I understand the basics of it, but my second electric fundamentals course that MEs are required to take reassured me that electric engineering wasn't for me. He was a horrible teacher, Mario Magaña, in case you end up having to take a class from him. Honestly I wish I know more about EE. Computer science, I really have nothing against it. I just don't want to only be at a computer and do nothing else. I like being able to go to the shop and go to the plants during internships and check out what I am designing and what it's going on.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'm glad to help. Look into MECOP if you haven't already. I think you'd be interested and that's what I did.

The truck looks good! I think you're right about tire size. Maybe something closer to the outer diameter of the tire on the 18s. What size tire are you running on the 20s? It's ok to have the yoke stick out slightly from the transfer case. I'll take a picture of mine this weekend if I remember. Also, I'm assuming you are running a one piece driveshaft. If so, your trans or transfer case should be pointing down to the rear and diff should be pointing up to the front and they should be parrallel. This will make it so each u joint has the same working angle so the vibrations will be cancelled out. I attached a driveshaft install manual from spicer/dana where it says how to set it up with pictures.

Thanks! And thank you for the install manual. I've read through about half of it. It's good information. My driveshaft is just about level after the lowering. I think I put in 3° shims after the first go around. I'll measure everything and make sure it's correct after I get my driveline back.

One thing that kind of sucks though, my new drive line will end up being a smaller diameter. The current one balloons out to 3". They can replicate that so it'll be smaller the entire length. I told him what I'm doing and he assured me it will still be plenty strong. I hope so.

Maybe it would have been smarter to find an aluminum driveshaft from a silverado SS? Then shorten it.


Maybe I'm making a bigger deal out of this than is necessary? lol

You can ask them to tell you what the critical RPM will be for the new shaft and see how close you are to 6000 RPM (that's redline in whatever gear is 1:1). If you're too close you might want to consider ordering one from driveshaft specialist. They made me a 2 piece 3.5" steel one with HD u joints, carrier bearing, and a billet trans slip yoke. It's a high quality piece and has a critical speed of over 8500 RPM. I think I am safe. I wanted such a high critical speed because I am running 4.88 gears with 29" tires (camaro t56) and my DS will spin at higher RPM than most. It was spendy, but worth the peace of mind IMO. Plus if I ever boost it (highly likely) then I dont have to change anything rear of the trans.

I recently purchased a knock off gopro camera so I thought it would be fun to record a before and after video.


If you're interested, here's the homemade magnetic mount I made for the "gopro". It's actually a SJCAM 5000+. I'm impressed with it really, although I've never had a gopro to compare it to.

What do you guys think of the video? At first I thought that was a lot of vibration, but after reviewing it a few times, I think it's pretty normal. You can see in the video that I start from a dead stop and then accelerates hard up to about 90 miles an hour or so. The part at the 2:00 mark, where it starts leaking, is a steady cruise as 55 mph.

Pretty cool setup on that camera and mount. Have you checked out your stud mount bushings lately? How do they look and how many miles?

I wanted to post an update. My life as been hectic the last few years. My truck has been parked for the most part. Lately it's been on my mind.

Anywho, I've been re-reading my notes and whatnot. So the next part of my project is to put together my 6.0L. (That I started tearing down in 2012, yikes!) I might try my hand at porting the stock heads (317), nothing crazy.


Here's what I've got going on:

So I need to get all my stuff together and inventory everything. I know there are things I'm forgetting.

I'm wondering if I should go with a different cam? When I bought the LS6/Z06 camshaft I was planning on installing it in my LM7. I'm wondering how appropriate it is in the larger 6.0L, or if it even matters that much.

I'm imagining needing a low duration, high lift camshaft for torque output when out of boost, but then I have to also consider that .81 A/R.

I'm looking for some wisdom here. Is the Isky triple 212 what I should be running? Everyone seems to love it.

I'm not concerned with a choppy idle, I'm indifferent actually. All I'm concerned with is what's best for my street setup. I don't need every last horsepower at redline. It's supposed to be a fun daily driver.

I'm very much a function over form kind of guy.

The LS6 cam was the go-to turbo cam for these engines for a long time. It will do just fine and drive great.
