Thanks alot guys. I think since my engine already have the heads off i will put the 5.3 crank and rods in it. What size cam would be good for something like this. The car should weight in at around 2700LBS? Thanks again.

If you do the piston and crank swap you can definetely make at least 325 or more. I had a 2004 4.8l and did a cam swap, ported the heads a little bit to make them brand new, new springs, arp rod bolts for strength for the higher revs, long tube headers, circle d 3000 stall converter, rebuilt 4l60e, and a bad *** tuner and making 304 to the wheels. everything else is stock and it revs to 6700 all day. Also have the LS1 intake mainly for looks. I would recommend an LS6 as well, you will lose torque with the LS1 intake. Mine is in an 85 C10 so I didnt care about torque. Looks bad *** but if your going for power adders I would get a 6.0 intake, cant beat that intake but since you have clearence issues that wouldnt work. My cam is a 220/220 581 112 comp cam. All the power is high up in the RPMs so you will have to get a converter with at least a 3k stall, I wish I went with a 3400-3500. Good luck man I am glad to see someone trying out a 4.8l too. Heres a pic of mine.

my 212/218 pulls good after 2500, have the Trailblazer I-6 TC from Chevrolet all the way. Both work great together. 4.8L's benefit greatly from gears and stalls. If you got the 5.3 crank use it. IMO

My heavy *** truck hauls pretty good with the 4.8, Your Vega weighs considerably less so it should move out really well no matter what.

I tried to swap the crank and rods and ran into a small problem. The 5.3 I have has the floating pins and the 4.8 has press fit pins.
I have bought a set of stock ls1 pistons and rods and am going to bore the 5.3 block and make a high compression iron block ls1. Found the pistons and rods for cheap so I can do the machine work. Also going to port and polish the heads and see what cam is good this combo. Thank you for all the info and help.

It is a 76 vega riding on an 87 2 door blazer frame. The car wheel base is stretched to 101" wheelbase so I can use the blazer tank and fuel and brake lines. Like I said earlier in this thread it is getting a 4.8 with hopefully 300-350rwhp. with a 4l60e with a converter. It has a narrowed 8.8 ford rear with 3.73 gears and 4wheel disc brakes.
Let me know what you all think and Thank you for looking.
Car looks great.. I love the vega wagons.. Had one for a while, rust got to me and it left..

If its on a Blazer frame you could make it AWD as well.. Use the smarttrak xfer case or the case from a typhoon..

That would be sick
