If you are going to spend that much money on a 5.3L, not sure why you wouldn't just start with a 6.0L like Dirttrackracer stated. You might spend a bit more for the block itself but you are buying all the same parts that would make a 408. No replacement for displacement.

408 is a lot of cubes for a daily driver, but for racing beats a 383 hands down. No argument there. Just saying that the 383 is a pretty nice engine.

Why in the hell would you say a 408 is too many cubes for a DD?

I'm running 11psi of boost and making well over 500 reliable wheel horsepower and similar torque. I would do it all over again. Here's my build thread:

I've gained a lot more HP since I ended this thread. A bigger blower would likely see almost 600rwhp. Ahh, some day...

In my opinion, all the myths pertaining to boring out the 5.3 are pure bunk.
Well By God!! I'm glad it worked out for ya. Cool Deal. So you bored the 5.3 out to a 6.0/6.2? Did you have to go with a larger cooling system? Just wondering. thanks

Yea well the more I read, the more I am understanding what your getting at. Im no mechanic. Just a parts changer. My son is really on the up and up on all this But he is working in a shop and I work in a office so I can get on a computer when I can not talk to him. Plus its good to get more peoples opinion in my book that own stuff like this. My uncle is about 60 and is also the Charlie Daniels of the torque wrench. We were all sitting around and one day and I came across this article that I stated on Truck'n. Thats were it all started. I have a 2001 GMC Sierra. So the block I already have. But like you are saying with the cost amount I have priced some engines today around $1,100-$1,500 shipped. The one Im looking at is out of a 2001 Chevy 2500. iTS A 6.0. Now I didnt get all the questions in that I needed to ask him. This should be an iron block correct? and come with iron heads correct? The aluminum heads didnt come out until later? I dont know.

I'm pretty sure all 2001+ LQ4s are aluminum headed. Someone can correct me if i'm wrong though. All LQ4s have iron blocks.

No, I used the stock 5.3 cooling system and it is plenty. And most days I think a 383 is too big for a DD lol. Slurp slurp.
