LOL. For future reference, get a cheap brass punch at harbor freight. Place it in the center of the pinion with the nut around it then hammer it out. This will keep you from damaging any thing.

What smells worse the gear oil or a certain some one??? Enquiring minds want to know...

I keep a spare pinion nut just the thread down on the pinion shaft and give it a shot so it comes out. Thread it off, throw it in the tool box and put your good one on the new gears...

Yeah, gear oil stinks, new or old. It's got a lot of sulphur in it.

a tip for next time when doing this on the ground.

there are only 8 bolts holding that bed on. remove the bed and life is suddenly easier!!!

or invest in a lift.

i hate the smell of gear oil
i hate the smell of trans fluid
i HATE the smell of burnt trans fluid
and i HATE HATE HATE the texture of trans fluid and somehow the smelly burnt **** always ends up in my hair, all over the back of my shirt i just end up making snow angels from trans fluid because i always do my swaps on lowered trucks on the ground which is a messy job.

/rant.

So on a scale of fresh baked lasagna to mother in law, where does gear oil fall in line?

Man i gotta say the MILs toxic gas is worse than any vehicle fluid. Even burnt ones.

Well they are all installed. I went for a test drive. Nothing fell apart and the truck made it home. There is a slight hummm at steady state cruising, not a big deal to me. You have to have the radio off and window rolled up to hear it. No noise on accel or decel which before it was rather noisy. Oh well not bad for my first attempt.

The first time I did gears I didnt crush the crush sleeve enough so the pinion had some movement in it...talk about a roar on decel!
