Default budget 14 bolt SF freshin up with pics

hello boys, just got in from off shore but leavin back out either sunday or monday hopefully this will be done lol, but heres what we got...

im sure some off yall remember what i did to my 10 bolt, well it got replaced with a rusty ol 14 bolt SF, stock with 3.42 gears and a open diff. i rode it for about a year. well, when a open diff starts looking both tires together, somethings wrong so i scored some 4.10 OEM gears from Jasqen, thanks buddy :cheer: he also really helped me out ALOT with a install kit. and Sharpshooter hooked me up with a very good condition G80 for $70 shipped, so that pretty much got me everything i needed to do a lil freshin up on her, so today when i got in, i pulled the rear end out and tore it down...and this took awhile, the 'bull pin' somehow siezed up inside the spider gear, i beat on it with a BFH and it barley moved....so i got the torch and went to town. got it torn down and clean up and shot some primer on her, and got the 2 pinion racespressed in, and called it a night, ill be back in tha morning to get back on it..

sorry for the crappy cell pics, my camara went dead.

also sand blasted and painted the MASSIVE drums and rear end cover

id like to give a very spacial thanks to axisT6 for helpin my out with questions i had, and im sure tomorrow ill be callin him for help

ok, got back on it today. got to the shop, made some 'set up bearings' which help ALOT. i had to change pinion shims 3 times before finding the right combination. all you gotta do is open up the ID of the old bearings, i used a sanding wheel on my grinder...

after that, the set up went pretty smooth, getting the backlash right took a few trys but i got it, i ended up getting .003 of an inch, specs where like 2-6. setting preload on the 14 bolt was a B!TCH, my half inch impact wouldnt do it, it took a long cheater bar and pipe wrench and ended up with like 17 inch pounds. after that it went pretty smooth. got her painted up and waiting to go in

tools of awesomness

shes waiting to for the rear to be stabbed back in place:looking:

when i said i had to cut the center pin out, heres what i meant

ill report back tomorrow when i drive it back home

another thanks to axisT6, i gave him a call today with some questions and he was glad to help me out. thanks buddy

Hey buddy, feels good to be coming back huh? to bad i gotta go back out monday

the install really wasnt bad, you just gotta take your time and be prepared to take it apart a few times before getting it right.

AxisT6 told me a pinion shim he used on another 14 bolt SF, so thats what i started with, and it was off by like .013, just goes to show every rear end is different.

haha you bet. it's been 3 weeks too long.
when i set up the one in Blue, i just reused the stock pinion shim and it worked out good. i need to tighten the backlash some b/c it's whining on decel. it was setup loose.

ok boys, shes back together and on the road

i havent even took her past 1/4 throttle yet and the difference is already very noticable. im gonna go drive around town and break her in some more, also, no noise or whinning

no for the grand total....

complete axle outta a 92 C2500LD.....$100
1.5 inch spacers...$80 (not needed id you can find the right axle)
OEM 4.10 gears...$100
used G8....$80
install kit...$135
paint, pinion seal and other small things...$30
so $525 for a pretty BIG improvment over the 10 bolt, not to shabby
