If you look through the top of your stock air cleaner assembly, you can see that there is so much stuff in the way that little air can get by it all. The bowl gives the much needed extra room and allows a easier path for air flow into the engine.

To be something so simple, I have heard excellent feedback from this.

Well I filled up today and at 410 miles it took 41 gallons. That is 10 mpg on the nose. I might have done a tiny bit more hi way but it should be about the same ratio of city and hi way. I am probably going to get another tank at least as is to average them out and see if I can duplicate the 10.0.

flip the aircleaner lid and buy a throttlebody spacer if it's a TBI, don't waste your money on a TBI intake manifold.
