Not getting in the middle of this or picking sides...
Cool picture, but that piston looked like it blew from the crown down, like detonation might do. If it did blow from the ring lands the piston crown would of been sheered up, no down like it is now. Same with the compression ring.
You could probably do that kind of damage, with the metal all being melted in that direction with a acetylene torch burning from the top of the piston, that's what leads be to think it was detonation, than the piston cracked and left a massive hole in it, and then whoever was driving that motor didn't stop soon enough and there was a couple power strokes where the gasses were shooting through there like a geyser of fire.
But I'm no piston engineer by any means so I could be way off. Cool *** pic though!!

wow this got off topic but i havent read this in a while . you have pretty crappy luck man but we have all been there its part of the game. youll get it running just stick at it. besides half the fun is the build when its over you get bored.

Got the engine pulled today. 7 looks like it got hot, but there doesnt appear to be any damage....crankcase pressure must have been unreal because there was a pretty good amount of oil sitting in the passenger side cylinders on top of the pistons when I took the head off.
Pass side head is pretty toasty above #8, not really worried about it though, they are stock 317s with dual springs and rev valves.
