Castings are so high in impurities (non-aluminum, silicates) it doesn't surprise me that you can see variation in color. The method of casting and heat cycle also contribute to the color, I think it'll be less visible once polished out.

Look at the machined areas and you can see it'll polish up nicely.
The down side is that you'll have to hand rub it out once a month, or more if near the coast to keep it looking nice.
I'm looking at polishing my wheels and hating life right now.
