RCSB LQ4/80E swap... Take two
#141
So... went to the track in April, was less than impressed. I think I need to get my shift points bumped up. But, it still makes crap for power. I did a compression test, it seems to be healthy. Checked fuel pressure at idle, also looks good. Still need to do a pull and see if fuel pressure is stable - although I expect it to be. I swapped my Airaid MIT/modded air box for a Banks Ram Air - IATs actually dropped and drop quicker once you're moving vs. before. I'm trying to get back to the track and see if I can improve on the ET and MPH.
Overall, I am just going over every inch of the truck to see if I missed anything when I swapped the engine. If I can't find anything, it is what it is and I'll start changing parts to get more power out of it.

Went back to the track on the 16th, WAY hotter. 2900+ DA But, it ran nearly identical times to what it ran in April at 1500-1800 DA. So, May not seem like it... but inching in the right direction. I broke down and bought HP Tuners, data logged at the track - VERY helpful. Figured out why it's so sluggish in the first 330'.
1. IATs are through the roof 140-150 degrees at the beginning of the pass, 115-120 at the stripe.
2. My converter is supposed to be a 2800-3000 stall, per data logs... it's a 2000-2200 at best. (Basically similar to my stock 80E converter)
Last weekend I believe I addressed one issue. I added a scoop to the air box that draws in air from next to the foglight. And sealed off the side of the box that pulls air from the fender. 2-3 weeks out, I'll will be swapping to a 3400-3800 rated converter. The combination of the two should improve the performance of this pig. 🤞

I am sure it will stall higher since that original converter was meant for a smaller engine. It may not be efficent though. How ever I hope it doesn't cost you a transmission later on down the road.

So I have not gotten around to changing the converter. Kind of holding off on that job, waiting for cooler weather. However, I did make it back to the track this past Sunday. Only got 2 passes, but picked up about .15 and 1 MPH. All I have changed since last time is adding that scoop and relocating the battery to the passenger side. I screwed up and filled up the tank the day before. So had 7/8 tank of fuel vs. 1/2 - 5/8 last time.

Nothing really new to report. I did install exhaust cut outs on it a few weeks ago. They were free, so I figured why not? I placed them between the bullet mufflers and the Magnaflow. Even going through 4' of pipe and the bullet mufflers, it's ROWDY. I'll try it out capped vs. uncapped the next time I'm at that track. Not sure it will gain much, but who knows?

So I went back to the track on the 24th of last month, new PB of 13.626 @ 101.84 MPH. Basically cooler air, and less fuel. Back to back passes with the cut outs closed vs. open = zero gain. Pretty much what I expected - my exhaust system works well at this power level.
This past Friday I installed 4.56 gears... because I like to party and my 4.10s were noisy. If everything works out, November 3rd I'll be testing that change out. Then I'll finally change the converter and get one last shot at getting a 12.9x slip in December. Whatever it runs, I'm done with this combination at that point. Different heads and camshaft will be on the agenda for the new year.
