Every turbo vehicle cooks the oil that doesn't drain out of the housing after you shut it down. Are you concerned about yours for any particular reason? Or is it just being able to see the temperature that's driving you crazy?

When I had the compressor wheel swapped the main journal bearing near the turbine side showed significant wear, especially for only having a few hundred miles on it. In this case I think having the oil temp gauge in front of me offered a false sense of security. Driving on the interstate it will creep up from 180ish to 210ish, but when I stop and let it idle it goes down to the 190ish mark, but I think some of that was due to not enough spark advance in the part throttle cruising range. I could spend days tuning part throttle spark on a dyno...

I ordered a infrared thermometer from amazon, so when that gets here I will do some tests to see how hot its getting. If im not happy with it, I may step up to a -6 line for the feed to get more oil volume in there.

brad penn 10w30, but I just bought a case of brad penn 20w50 for next time. Thats probably the only reason (the good oil) the turbo didnt have more significant damage (according to Reed).

Did the shaft have any noticeable play before you swapped it out? I check play every time I have the filter off, maybe once every month or two and never had an issue on any of my turbos.

I had no reason to suspect any damage prior to disassembly. Thrust play was perfect, but for journal turbos you need oil pressure (aka, engine running) to test for radial play since the shaft basically floats in oil. It seemed fine to be, but the wear on the bearing was pretty clear. I should have taken pictures but Reed already had it torn apart and had begun rebuilding it when I thought about it. I really doubt he still has that bad journal or could find it if he did.

Well, you were demanding a lot from that 76mm with your 402. Once you tap out a turbo flow-wise, compressor RPM shoots way up. Ask Jarrett about that You might still overspin that 80mm as well as you keep trying to go faster..
