For what its worth I did it with the stock 80e gearing. Granted I had really short tires on there. I have debated the shorter first gear as well... I guess we will see how you make out. I kind of figured as power increases the shorter gears will only amplify traction problems.
Scour craigslist for some stock 17" wheels and tires to race on. Or continue the trend of doing everything all out and grab some racestar 17's with M&H drag radials. They are what I race on and will make a really good difference compared to your stock 20's or new 22's. I have the M&H tires on stock wheels, but the racestars look pretty sweet and are lighter than stockers.
Any progress or thoughts on your heads?
All these mods combined, as long as your tune is right I see no reason you shouldnt be aiming for 10's in this thing.
I gotta make some changes and make em quick...

I found some stock chevy 4x4 wheels on Craigslist but they are 16" - are they too small for our brakes or something?
If I decide to do the heads it won't be until later this summer or fall. I really want to see how she runs this spring first. 10's would obviously be great, but I think that may a long shot...low 11's, maybe

I'm not running meth either so I don't see what the 80e gearing has to do with anything

Other SSS guys have run 16's. Those may work for you. Here are a couple pics of 'Krambo'
As far as meth. I use it more for the Octane boost than the cooling effect. I would run e85 if it was available as I think its an even better option than 93+meth. You will be in a better situation than I am running e85 IMO.

Thanks for those pics Rob - I have to say his truck looks a little silly with those tiny rims and tires, although, it also looks like he's running no drop which makes them look even smaller. Hopefully mine won't look as bad if I decide to go this route!
I actually found those same rims on CL from two different dudes - the 16's are just the rims for $300 and the 17's have all terrain tires for $400 ...decisions, decisions!
The main reason I'm doing the gearing change on the 80 is to not only compete with your awesome time of 11.43, but because 99% of the time I'm going to be running the 22" intros with 305/40/22's which are 31.5" tall. Even where I'm at right now with 11psi, I get absolutely no wheel spin and had a horrible 1.83 60' last time I was out and ran the 12.00 @ 115. I think I need the gearing change for a better launch on that setup. NOW, Eddie Mack from the SSS forum is running the jackshaft on 18 psi with the same 16" wheel/tire setup as Krambo and says he gets very little wheel spin during the launch, AND he's running the FLT 65e level 7 with a 3.06 first gear which is even taller than the one I intend to have installed. I think his 60' is 1.53 with an 11.1 quarter mile. If I can get even pretty close to that time, I'll be smiling from ear to ear!
