Default Weekend thrash: Aksilverado

Daniel has been collecting parts for his truck, and we decided that this was the weekend to get our asses to work. Hopefully he pops in on this thrread. He's a member here(Aksilverado), but he doesn't post much. Here's a quick rundown...

The truck is a 2011 RCSB Chevy with a 5.3/6L80E 4x4 powertrain. Here's a pic from last fall, 100% stock.

First on the mod list was a 4/7 drop kit, using McGaughy's suspension components. It took 4* shims to get the pinion angle corrected. Here's the new stance, perfect for Alaskan winters.

That was how the truck has been through the whole winter. Bone stock with a 4/7 drop. But the parts have been collecting.

Autometer triple pillar pod.
Autometer GS series gauges:
Wideband
Fuel Pressure
Vacuum/Boost
1 7/8" ARH headers with catless 3" y-pipe & custom 4" merge.
4" MBRP muffler.
4" MBRP Duramax DPF back system.
D.O.D. delete.
V.V.T. delete(to our suprise).
Vinci custom grind cam.
Crane 7.40" pushrods.
Vinci/Crane Extreme Duty dual valve springs.
Yella Terra 1.8 roller rockers.
Circle-D 258mm 3400 single disk billet converter.
ARP head studs.
.028" ring gap.
I probably left something out...

Daniel installed his gauges a couple weeks ago, they look great. Here's the gauges installed.

Default Weekend thrash begins...

So that's how the truck sat on Saturday morning. The goal was to get everything installed & running in 2 days, then get the tune dialed in during my spare time throughout the week.

Saturday morning the engine came out, then it was put on a stand & torn down. More pics.

Ready to come out.

Sorry guys, didn't slow down to take pics of it apart. But the ring gaps were opened up to .028" in preparations for boost. The stock pistons, rings, rods, & rod bolts were all re-used.

One thing we didn't plan on was needing to delete the VVT. We went into this project thinking that it was a D.O.D. engine, and didn't know that it also had V.V.T. Had to make a quick run into Anchorage for a new LS2 timing cover and seal, and we were back on track. Continued the reassembly of the engine, and here's a pic.

Has new MLS head gaskets, ARP head studs, Vinci cam, LS7 lifters, Vince/Crane dual valvesprings, LS2 timing set, LS2 timing cover, and I pinned the crank pulley.

Then we set her back in the chassis before we called it a day.

So, after I had a late breakfast with the fam, I headed down to the shop. Daniel had the transmission & converter bolted up, headers on, starter, and was buttoning up on the front end accessories. Then we got the valvetrain set up. Ended up using the shims that YT includes in the kit to get the valvetrain geometry and lifter pre-load correct.

Not long after that, everything was back together. Looks lethal, doesn't it?

We still had to figure out the exhaust system. We had a bunch of parts, but we just guessed at what to buy, and hoped that we could make it work. Didn't really know how this would go, and was worried that it might not work. Here's how the 4" exhaust went together. Please try to look past my welds, I know they aren't pretty.

The ARH headers went in without a hitch. Plenty of clearance. Can't get over how nice these things are.

And then the MBRP stuff. 4" aluminized piping, all mandrel bent, stainless muffler. I gotta say, welding stainless to aluminized steel isn't that much fun.

But,

Looks like there's some room for a resonator if this ends up being too obnoxious.
