3M adhesive remover is great, and you can buy it in one-quart quantities at most hardware stores. You'll need some heat too, though, to break down the residue. When doing big jobs like door trim I'll generally presoak (using a 4oz bottle with a small-nozzle cap) for a bit before trying the heavy work.
