so mix the base with the correct additive as if you were painting a car, then pour it into the clear mixture? at a 1 to 4 ratio

Yeah pretty much, I didn't do a specific ratio any of the times I've done em, like I said I just added the black till the color looked good then multiple coats to get em as dark as I wanted.
