The Hard Way

Well this wasn't wide open (F5) but it is a lot more open than I'd usually shoot (F11) and it actually means the shutter will be open for less time. The larger the aperture, the shallower the depth of field, so less of the picture will be in focus. On a shot that's sort of close to a profile you can get away with it without the front and rear of the truck losing sharpness.

Imagine we had a dozen girls in bikinis in the background (Totally possible, right?) For that we'd want all the depth of field we could get, but if Dave had been posing in a Speedo in the background we'd want your truck in focus, but Dave nice and blurry, as to not detract from the photo. Just open the aperture and bingo, Speedo Dave turns into a blurry Bigfoot in the background and we get to see your truck without the distraction.
