Hey guys! Got a question for ya! Got a 2012 Silverado that I'm putting a 408 stroker in it with a rpm level 5 4l80 with a tru cool 40k cooler. Do you recommend running the cooler lines right to the cooler and bypass the rad? Or is it better to keep it run through the rad then to the cooler? I live in PA so it is hot in the summer and cold in th winter... I know going through the rad will help to warm the trans in the winter. But will that keep the trans too hot in the summer? Thanks!

 

Imo bypass the radiator..especially with a expensive transmission like that..imagine radiator going bad and sending water into the transmission..in the cooler weather you could cover up half the trucool 40k so it can run a little warmer

 

I'm with the guy above me. I'm in DC so we get cold and hot too. Since my 80e and 40k install I've driven in 25f weather. No problems.

If I were back in AK with -30F weather is get a new rad and plumb into it.

 

Cold as it is in pa i would say run it through radiator, with the bypass....

 

I have a 40k on two of my trucks up here. They both bypass the radiator. In the winter completely cover the cooler with cardboard. I paint it black and use those cheap plastic radiator clamp kits from Napa to hold the cardboard on. No one can see it and the trans still gets up above 100 degrees in -20 to -40 temps. It takes a while but it does getup to temp. Just don't rod on it until you have some temp in the trans.

I say bypass the factory radiator. Way better for the summer temps. But I have no experience with the bypass setup either.

 

I am also in DC and have bypassed the radiator tranny cooler. I have a pretty big cooler.

 

Thanks guys I'll go ahead and bypass it! Does anyone know the thread size on a nnbs silverado rad for the trans cooler side so I can cap it off?

 

Autozone is good for something! According to their site the thread is 9/16-18 so I can just go to the hardware store and and 2 short 9/16 thread bolts!
