i just noticed the other question. a 65E is a heavy duty version of the 60E. the 70E is an even heavier duty version of the 65E and is new for 06'. i'm glad the SS only gets the 65E. i'd rather use it for this application than a poorly geared power sucking 80E anyday. until you get past 600+hp, the 80E isn't necessary when it comes to racing.

I agree zippy. The 700R4, 4L60-E, 4L65-E, and 4L70-E are all very similar designs that are much more efficient at transferring power than the 80 and 85. The larger transmissions, modeled after the TH400 have larger pumps, and thus take more of the engine's torque to turn the pump instead of the wheels.
The smaller trannies are more efficient, so if you can make one work for your power application, it will put more ponies to the ground, and weigh less.

that's correct. the company that provides the information booklets for the magazine testers all had the SS listed as a 4L85E. what is sad about that is the magazine's such as chevy high performance should have known this was incorrect by simply looking under the truck. in my opinion that was an embarassment to the magazine. true chevy guys can tell you the difference between a 65E and an 85E. they also listed the truck they tested as an 06' and it was an 05'.
