Default Build Up of the 14 Bolt Semi-Floating Axle

I am doing a build for a member on this board. He is going to be building a serious truck and needed an axle to handle the power. I sourced a 68" wide (from a Z71 half ton) 14 Bolt 6 lug axle from Charlies Auto and Truck Salvage in Tomball TX.

The beauty of this axle is that has thick 33 spline shafts, 9.5" ring gear, bigger bearings, bigger housing with larger axle tubes, 1350 yokes, and still accepts 6 lug wheels.

The build plan is as follows:

4.10 gears
Detroit Truetrac
Disc Brake Conversion
Relocation of Spring Perches
ALL new bearings and seals
Complete one-off custom Rustoleum Paint Job

I will post pics tomorrow if I get the camera to cooperate.

Just for my info and anyone else that is curious, at what power level should a 14 bold become part of the list to buy?

Or another way....where does the 10 bolt give out with aftermarket gears/diff installed?

I don't really know to be honest. It's just that this guy plans 600 RWHP. That and with the way he plans on driving it, it's just cheap insurance.

Besides, having a 14 SF in your truck is just cool.

Show me one person who has launched on a 10 bolt with slicks that actually hook with 700+hp. I dont a **** how badass your 10 bolt is with what kind of axles, the housing is inherently weak and is going to flex. Lets look at the guys who are in that power level, 2toneblown 9", blacksheep 9", Parish running 4wd and spinning, GreenThunder believe he had a 9" in the rear too, all it will take is one good solid hook at the track and you will be walking home. You are asking alot of a little 8.6" ring gear with a lot of hp and a heavy *** truck.

Here are pics of progress:

Here is the axle torn down. Notice the BEEF in the housing.

Here is shot of the relocated perches which is necessary to do because the the 88-98 trucks have a 47" perch width, and the 99+ trucks have a 49" perch width.

And here is the 14 SF Detroit True-Trac with the 4.10 ring bolted to it. This unit weights 40 LBS.! BEEFY!

This Biaach is Geared!!

The drum brake assemblies have been removed because I am going to adapt the factory disk brakes to this axle.

Here it is painted the bling Rustoleum Gloss Black.
