Exclamation Had an eventfull drive home this evening

Left work today, and was playing around on the freeway....
I guess it was payback...
I had just finished showing a guy, how a real truck should run...
walked from him pretty good,
was in good spirits, and just cruising along, when I notice I cannot see anything behind me...
It's hard enough with the double 5% limo on the back window, but I couldnt even make out a car...
then I noticed in the side view mirrors a wall of white smoke trailing behind me...
thought ahh crap, I must have blown the motor finally....
looked at the gauges, and the trans was reaing 130*-140*
Oil pressure was normal, and the Engine temp was normal at 190*
thought what the hell,
truck still had the get up and go, so I decide to pull over...
popped the hood, got out and opened the hood and low and behold,,
I have got me a small inferno...
Passenger side header was ingulfed in flames...
thought to my self HOLY CRAP!!!!!!

ran aroound the truck, to the passenger side, and found a water bottle I had not finished drinking, and threw that on the fire.. it put out a little bit, but some of the fire was still going..
I good samaritan that was leaving work right accross the feeder road from me, saw what was happening, and rushed over with a 5 gallon bucket of water...which I then used to put out the rest of the fire....

A friend helped me tow it home, along with my wife..
once it was home I pulled it in the driveway under it's own power..
noticed it was leaving a real nice sized trail of trans fluid on the street as well as the driveway..
Jacked her up, and had the wife fire her up, and found that my rubber hose coming from the transmission has slpit and is spewwing trans fluid all over the the under body of the truck.. back of the motor, and headers..It starts at the motor and coats the whole truck, to the roll pan..
needless to say I have some cleaning up to do tomorrow, and some fixing to do...
had to finsh repairing the wifes Yukon. tonight..
Her door hinge had bent, and i had to replace all of that..
1 hinge, 4 bushings, and an inside door handle...
I have been way to busy this week..
i need a vacation.......................................... ..............

and I will also be buying me a fire extinguisher this weekend as well!!!!

that exact same thing happened to me on the freeway under different conditions but no flames...i was trying to log the VE table with charlie and i manually downshifted into second so the log could see the whole rpm range and loe and behold, the inline aux. filter caused way too much back pressure for that rubber hose to hand and it busted, i was like hey, smells like mexican food, what kinda restaurant is open at 3:30am??? charlie looked behind me to a 1/2 mile of smoke...quickly pull into an office max parking lot, walk to walmart buy more fluid and a new hose clamp and fix it. very lucky it didnt burst into flames for neither of us had any liquids and if i remember right, we just took a ****. glad to hear everything worked out!

Yup! I've lost a trans line and dumped fluid all over the engine bay, damn lucky it didn't ignite!
Damn lucky you were able to extinguish that fire!! I would be very greatful. I bought one of those $14 fire extinguishers last weekend.

on my old s-10 with the a/c compressor up high I blew the seal on the back of it and it dripped oil on the exaust manifold... I though "gee, smells kinda like burnt bananna's"... a few seconds later I saw black smoke from under the hood, pulled over, shut it down and I had a fire. I got it out without causing more damage and bought a fire extinguisher the same day, it's now in my truck (reminder: check the date on that thing)

good thing there wasn't any real damage, could've been alot worse
