Default Bad channel... factory HU or ext amp?

I recently bought an 01 Tahoe LT with onstar and non-Bose premium audio. The driver front mid works sometimes and not others but the tweeter always works. I have removed the speaker and tested it externally and it is fine. I have not yet been able to get ahold of a wiring diagram to see how every thing is split between the hu and the amp so I have not been able to run any tests that way. I need to figure this out so I can get the right adapter to either put an additional external amp or aftermarket hu in the 'hoe because this intermittent channel is driving me nutz.

if it is non-bose then the amp is built into the head unit so the only course of action if it is not the speaker is to replace it with an aftermarket radio......

Not the case here. It is not Bose but does use an external amp located behind the glovebox. I finally tracked down a wiring diagram to trace out my problem. The LF door is a single channel (single +/- wire) from the amp and splits into two wires before going into the door to the seperate tweeter and midrange. Seems I have a bad wire going to the mid.
But now I have compounded the problem by tring to add a line converter to the rear speaker levels to add an additional subwoofer. It seems that the line converter fried the rear channels of my factory amp. So it looks like I am going to have to go to an aftermarket HU afterall.
