On/Off cycles can affect bulb life somewhat, especially incandescent bulbs, but only a little. It's mainly the expansion/contraction cycling on the tungsten filament.

But I would'nt worry about the ambient light sensor operation on your HID or any other kind of liights at all. Most all OEM systems that are HID (GM/Ford/Chrysler/German/Asian Manufacturers) have ambient light sensors and I'm sure that they don't measurably shorten lamp life. Just my 2 cents.

maybe so, when i said bad for them i meant hot on/off starts in general but forgot to say that. and your right OEM hid systems do it, my mom has a nissan with it, everytime u start it in the garage the hids pop on, everytime u pull in they pop on. thats twice per drive, will they last 100k+ probly so, is it unneeded imo, yes especially since the only reason its there are people are to lazy to reach down and turn there lights on. but when it comes down to it, i want control over my lights like said above.

Update: no issues with auto AC

I soldered a diode across the "Low Reference" and "Light Sensor" leads entering the BCM (under the dash). The auto AC seems to still operate normally.

In addition to dissabling the "auto headlights", I did a few other mods.

- Soldered a diode across from the "Headlight Signal" (switch signal) to the "Headlight Relay" (output to relay). This keeps the Lows on when the Highs are on.

- Soldered a diode across from the "Headlight Signal" (switch signal) to the "Fog Relay" (output to relay). This turns the Fogs on when the headlights are on (Fogs can still be turned on independent of headlights by pushing Fog light switch).

Keeping both the Lows and Fogs on while being able to run Highs adds considerable light to the road! I have done this on both my Camaro and Silverado, and neither have ever had any issues from doing so.

Happy Days

There are 5 (total) connectors on the BCM, 3 large, 2 small. They are #s 1-5 from left to right (C1, C2, C3, C4, C5....Driver's to Passenger's).

- Headlamp Switch Signal (from switch) = White, Pin A12, connector C4
- Low Beam Relay Control (output to relay) = Pink/White, Pin A4, connector C2
- Fog Lamp Relay Control (output to relay) = Dark Green/White, Pin A5, connector C2
- Ambient Light Sensor (signal in from sensor) = White, Pin A4, connector C3
- Low Reference (for ambient sensor) = Black, Pin B7, connector C4

Attached is the schematic I edited to show where diodes are placed.

Note: This is for 2004 models. I'm not sure what other years are the same.
