Default navigation antenna

Just got a 2005 GMC Yukon SLT. It has the Bose system (non lux) and factory rear seat entertainment and XM as well. I am getting ready to buy a used factory navigation unit. Does my vehicle already have the antenna for the navigation unit or do I need to get one? If it does have it where would it be located? Does it bolt to the back of the radio and plug into the green socket on the back? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why not go with an after market navigation?

You'll need to get the GPS antenna. For the life of me, I can't find the p/n - sorry about that - but I believe it's called "GPS antenna kit" or something similar. It connects (obviously) to the back of the radio, and then you have some options for mounting it. The "correct" way is to screw it to the dash frame. The kit includes the screw, and there's already a pre-drilled/threaded hole in the frame. To do this you'll need to pull the top of the dash. Not too big of a deal, but that also involves pulling the A-pillar trim. If you go that route, be careful with the tweeter connections (if you've got them) and then be VERY careful of the ambient light sensor in the back center of the dash. Many folks have just tucked the antenna behind the deck with no reception issues.

The other thing you'll want to consider is the VSS wire. My guess is your truck doesn't already have one, so if you want the best possible GPS tracking at speed you'll need to add it. It goes from the instrument cluster to the deck - I can probably look up the exact pinouts if you need them. Pros: accurate tracking at speed. Cons: nav function lockout @ ~ 5mph and above.

Good luck - this is a great mod and one you'll really enjoy. Probably obvious, but make sure you get a deck from a Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon, and not a Denali or Escalade. In other words, you want the "premium" Bose rig, not the "luxury" one.
