sealed or ported enclosure?? (vote)

The argument about not being able to hear 3dB difference....I can tell you that at 165+dB, you cannot tell the difference between the two without a calibrated meter (pcRTA, b&k). At 80dB, only those who study acoustics can tell readily, and that is with an A / B test (listen to 80dB, then 83dB). I have been involved in car audio for over 15 years now....from installing SQ systems to building a Record-setting SPL vehicle and competing with it from 1997-1999. I have had a hand in 4 more SPL vehicles, and am working on another vehicle that will 'turn some heads' when it hits the competing scene.

I disagree. I can tell when there is a 3dB increase at 165. I too was a SPL competitor (TEAM HERTZ) and hit well over 170dB in dB Drag racing. We won the '99 World Campionship for a 2 sub vehicle and have placed at finals in various other divisions. Jay Lovelace, Alma Gates, Wayne Harris and others will tell you the same. Theoretically speaking, in order to hit 3dB over your max, you will have to DOUBLE your power. I'll bet just about everyone can observe an audible difference by doubling their power.
By the way, what sanctioning body did you compete under (for SPL) during 97 - 99, what class?
I have since given up on the comp stereo hobby however we have built a vehicle that hit a 177dB on termlab equipment (legal mic placement) and never competed it.
Oh, keeping with the topic...I have never used a sealed enclosure. There is much more "performance" with a ported enclosure (properly tuned and the correct port area). Its kind of like having a 600HP 408 and only tachn' to 3K. Ported over sealed any day. Just for kicks, our 2 18" DD subs in our SPL car was in a 30 cubic foot enclosure with over 500 square inches of port area. Custom Quad coils with 15,000WRMS to each sub. Ahh, the good old days.
