Default So my iPod sounds like crap...

I recently added a Kenwood iPod mount that plays through my Kenwood head unit. The problem is when I play songs they don't sound anything like the quality of the original CD. I find myself just popping the CD in the deck instead of playing it through the iPod.

Is the problem the compression I used to rip all my cds? I think most of them play back at 128 kb/s...default I think. If I re-rip all my cd's using higher compression, that should increase the sound quality right? If so, what setting should I use so it sounds CD quality but doesn't take up too much disk space?

Thanks for the help guys, kinda new to the whole audio scene.

If the music was ripped to 128kbps... all the post enhancement will not make it any better... the "damage" is done. I will not download anything less than 160kpbs... preferably 320kpbs. Yes, the flash real estate becomes more of an issue but the quality increases drasticly after 128kpbs. Just IMO

Thanks Bill, that's the kinda help I was looking for. I think I'll delete my iTunes and rerip all my cd's at 320 and see if that helps.

I found 192 to be enough quality for me, but if I can download a vbr version, I will just do that. You might want to see what the eq settings on your ipod are.

i use my ipod with a stand alone FM modulator (plugs into the lighter for power, plays on an FM band) and it sounds fine most of the time. the majority of my songs are 128, and you know what, they sound fine. 192+ is nice if you have the space to store the data and a system worthy of reproducing that sound, but in the vehicles i drive, the audio components are all factory so going higher than 128 is overkill. not to mention its broadcasting over FM so there is degredation there too.

my guess is that something isnt right with your setup. make sure the dock connector is clean on both sides. the cause could be electrical interference from other components, such as ignition coils, alternator, etc.

I agree with chickenboy. 128kbps is known to be pretty much CD quality. Anything much more than that and you really have to have nice equipment to hear the difference. I would look around your settings in the ipod and deck.
