Well things change and I have alot of money invested in a hobby tool set. I personally would start out with Craftsman hand tools and IR air tools. After you have all of what you need start replacing what you want or what you need with Snap On. Just my opinion.
Good point COLDZ71, the snap-on catalog is like a kid in a candy store.

Guess what I use. Easy to replace and easy on the pocket. I only work on one truck so these are more than adequate.

Nice set up 1slowhow, that is perfect for a home garage. How are the Craftsman tool boxes compared to the snap-on boxes in qualitly? The craftsman ball bearing boxes are half the price of snap-on boxes.

I also have a few Craftsman side boxes, some small cabinets, bench, etc., but here's my main box (SnapOn). The Craftsman roller bearing boxes seem really nice to me...I've also seen a stainless steel box (top and bottom) at Costco that goes for around $600-$700...my father got one for his home garage just to check it out since it was so inexpensive. Been good for over a year now. From what I've read in the tool forum at LS1Tech, the same exact SS box is offered by different companies for a few grand.

You know, the tool you throw across the garage while screaming "Dammit!" after cracking your knuckles for the 12th time.

Damn, you guys are organized. I have a bunch of different stuff in 5 or 6 tool boxes. My first set was a S-K Wayne 1/2" drive set back in 72. Mostly I have Craftsman with a few Snap On,Proto and others. I have some air as well.

I don't work much on stuff anymore and never did it for a living.

Everything is metric nowadays,so get mostly metric tools. Old U.S. and British was the other kind. I guess some aftermarket stuff is still fractional, like someone said.

I've been able to find some pretty sweet deals on Snap On and Mac tools on ebay. When I was looking I set up some favorite searches until I found and bought what I wanted.
