Default Anyone else tow trailer with 22's or bigger

My wife has planted the seed of doubt in my mind now about whether there is enough sidewall on our plus size tires wrapped on 22 inch wheels. Have previously towed on plus sized 20's and was ok but this is a step up. Travel trailer approx 6500 lbs when fully loaded. Tire size is 285-45-22. Max load rating of the tire is 2337 lbs.

So that is around 9350 lbs capacity on 4 tires. Vehicle weighs 6000 lb, my family of 4 around 700 lbs, so that leaves around 2650 lbs to handle the trailer weight. Think I will be ok as tongue weight of trailer approx 650 lbs? Have load equalization bars so that adds a bit too.

Curious as to the experience of others.

Thanks in advance!

You will be just fine, the lower profile will actually help with trailer sway. Just make sure all tires are inflated to max pressure.

It looked silly but my buddy had 24's on his Hummer and we pulled his 23 foot boat all the time with it.

Thanks much. Those are hot looking rims - are they OZ Velas? Would look good on the Denali! I have Oz canyons on now.

I don't have pics, but I towed with 275/45r20's quite a bit. Drove and handled just fine, and the supercharger helped alot with the added rotating mass of the heavy-*** wheels, plus the heavy trailer.

Just remember that the transmission will be hating life if you decide to get throttle happy.

Agree. I don't want to get bent over in a repair shop far from home like I did many years ago when I burnt up some spark plug wires while trying to keep up with my brother in his turbo-diesel up the mountain roads in big heat - I think I ended up paying more than double what it should have been. RPM automotive in Kelowna made some good profit that day on the desperate sucker!
