So when I bought the truck it Nitto MT's on it, they were good in the mud but stupid loud above 45mph. I put on a set Toyo Open Country R/T's and they were way better. Similar performance in the mud but so much quieter and way more smooth on the road. When I went to the 17's I went with Nitto Ridge Grapplers and have been incredibly happy with them. Great performance in the dirt and sand, haven't had them in the mud yet but I don't see them not performing well. Great road manners as well.

My 35x12.50-17's are 75lbs each. The RT's in 35x12.50-20 were 71lbs each. Ride quality is worth the extra 4 lbs of tire weight, but losing overall rotating mass because of the 20s down to the 17's

4lbs likely wouldn't be noticeable so I agree ride quality would be more important. I still probably have a year left with these BFGs. I would be more concerned about running with low tread if I ever gave the truck the chance to have traction .
Also I'm seriously considering stepping down from load E to a C or D tire. I don't plan to tow much and when I do it won't be long distance or a heavy load.

What BFG's do you have currently?

I had the same tires on my 99 and they were terrible LOL. Went to 18's and to BFG gForce t/a KDW's and they were just as bad.
My Ridge Grapplers are also load range E and they don't feel stiff at all. I currently have them at 35psi and they feel a little soft/spongy so I plan on taking them up to 45 and seeing how they ride. Max is supposed to be 65psi, definitely won't be going that high lol.

They have never made me pull a rope to get myself unstuck but I would really like to try a modern tire at a lower price. I will certainly be looking at the ridge grappler I keep the BFGs at 35 and they have worn exceptionally well just loud and stiffer than a preacher's pecker.

I only had wear issues. But I also liked to do burnouts as often as possible.
