If you run 285's be prepared for ride quality to suffer a bit, but you can still tow with them fine. I have 285's mounted on the stock wheels on my '05 2500HD, though I swapped those wheels out for some '08 2500HD 17's with 265's on them which made the ride infinitely better, especially with the crank. I also have 315's mounted on the stock wheels on my '01 2500HD, but I only use one of them to act as a spare tire to back up my 35's on H2's on that truck, as actually driving on the 315's on a 6.5"-wide wheel is something I'd only do in an emergency.

Be sure to listen to this kid, he knows everything!
I have had similiar results changin tire sizes around. My suggestion was based on the current tire size you are running. It would be nearly the sime size tire overall, so your speedo and such wouldn't be effected.
265 to a 285 is nearly a 2 inch change in hieght, and around 1.5 change in width. Running on the approximate same size wheel you will see a direct effect on the ride and handling, especailly on a heavier duty truck. That being said, if your normally running around on 20's, you probrably wont care. We just changed a truck from 265's to 285's, you can definitely tell a difference in overall ride, but he likes the change.

A 265/75/16 is 31.6" tall
A 285/75/16 is 32.8" tall
That's a 1.2" difference. Of course this could be a tiny bit more or less from tire to tire but that's simple mathematics.
A 265 width tire is 10.43"
A 285 width tire is 11.22"
That's a difference of .79"
So as you can see there isn't much of a difference between the two. The thing you will notice though is that the type of tire will affect the ride quality. An all terrain tire won't ride as well as an all season tire, a mud terrain tire won't ride as well as an all terrain tire and a Super Swamper will ride terrible even if it's the same tire size.
If you have any questions I'd be glad to answer them.

Mark, I have a feeling that cttandy does not know your reputation.
I ran 305's on my stock rims and they were too wide the edges of the tires didnt wear nearly as fast a the middle. Id go with 285's max. Oh and expect to trim the bumper air dam, it rubbed a little on mine.
