Default Towing Advice

so im going through a dilemna right now with my 2003 gmc sierra. I just purchased a 2013 interstate 1 8.5x20' v nose enclosed trailer. I am towing my 2005 chevy colorado show truck in it this summer. My tow pig is a 2003 gmc sierra ecsb 2wd. The motor is a 6.0L lq9 with mild head work, small torque cam, and a full dynatech header system with corsa catback. The tranny is a 4l65e 2wd swap with billet servos. The truck is tuned by justin @ blackbear performance. Rear gears are 3.73's. I have it setup pretty well as far as load leveling bars, anti sway bar, and a set of airlift leveling bags. The truck tows the setup fairly well, but i am planning on doing some shows in tennesee and mississippi this coming spring. I am from ontario canada, right north of detroit michigan. I am a bit worried going through the mountains in tennesse with my truck and trailer. I plan on slapping on a trucool 40k cooler, and have justin tweak my tune for more of a towing tune. has anyone had any similar experiences with their 1500 1/2 ton. The colorado/trailer combo will be about 6000lbs ish. Im just having a hard time pulling the trigger on a diesel tow pig if i dont absolutely need one. I will be doing about 10 shows this year, with the two major hauls to tennesse and mississippi. Most other shows are fairly flat roads. thanks for any input you guys have

cory

Sounds like you are set up just fine. An 80E would be nice but the 65e should do you alright.

yea i seriously considered doing an 80e swap after my first stock 60e went on me. I got a really good deal on a brand new performabuilt 4l60e, but after about 7000 miles the reverse input drum exploded. I was in a pickle so i picked up a low mileage 4l65e that i had to swap in immediately. It has been working good so far. Knock on wood. My brakes are up to par in my truck as well, so hopefully the old girl makes it through the mountains

How much torque did that cam net you? Any dyno graphs of before and after?

i forgot to add as well, i do have a very good brake controller on my truck as well. The cam is an isky cam, i forget the exact specs but its like a 208/214 with a .551 lift, on a 114 lsa. Never got any before and after dyno numbers, but im gonna shoot out loud and say it made in the neighbourhood of 380hp and 400 ft lb at the flywheel.

I would go ahead and put the Trucool 40 on the truck and if you get in the hills you can drop it down to 3rd gear so it wont keep shifting. Besides Hydroboost brakes i think you got it covered.

Thats quite a trek for a truck show! Ive made that drive from MS to Grand rapids and Cheboyan, MI quite a few times with my last job.
Where at in MS and TN are you headed?

im headed down to morristown tn for Layd Out At the park in april, and Im headed to tunica Mississippi for Showfest in may. It is about 10 hours for me to TN, and about 13 hours to MS. I was planning on keeping it in third most of the times through the heavy climbs through the mountains.
