The idea is only for a limited time to stimulate the new car market. It is my understanding that that cars are scraped for parts to help subsudize the amount they give you.The last catch is you have to buy a brand new car not everyone will be going this route. It will however move a lot of shitty gas guzlers off the market.

I have a gauge for that

The theory behind destroying the engine is they permanetly take those parts out of use so they dont somehow make it back on the road, circumventing the whole idea of getting polluting engines off the road...
However, most of the profit for scrap yards is in the engine and transmission, and its a nice paperweight after they sieze it. Its basically worthless after they get done with it except for body parts, and to even qualify for it, the car must be crushed within 180 days.

Well I'm sure there are no emmissions created by intentionally grenading the engine. And of course the fluids are all properly recycled and disposed of. What a moronic program...

oh man... i think its a pretty good program.. get those p.o.s cars of the road.. some and most of those cars wont even pass an inspection... time to crush them.. more new cars means more jobs and helping get these big companies on their feet.. which means more jobs!!! people gernade their own vehicles all the time by not changing oil etc... why is it a problem now? look at the big picture, not "oh i could have used that car".. bs.. u cant use that car if it cant pass inspection... so it actually cost more to keep a pos running than buying a new car. add a quart of oil a day plus riding with expired inspection, tickets, bad mpg's, adding water, u get the point. get a new corolla for 289 a month with 30+ mpg's.. why not!!

car looks great! and didnt wanna give up. lol.. do we know how many times its been in the service department? do we know if it has any warning lights on the dash? do we know if that thing could even pass inspection? maybe the owner was tired of it breaking, maybe a lemon?? someone got 4500 for it and now has a new car..
I don't think those guys did a good job of draining the oil out of that volvo.

Car welfare is a great idea
There's this proven thing that exists, it's called the economic self correcting mechanism. A lot of people recognize that it works but they think it takes too long. So the answer is lets spend a lot of money and have the GOVT work some magic. Great idea. I can tell you capitalism is more successful than socialism. Big bank and auto maker bailouts? Justified to prevent basically another depression. But this crap has to end at some point, otherwise we will eventually be like Sweden
