Well it's a government sponsored institution that is publicly traded, their only purpose is to keep banks & financial companies fat so they can always lend to home buyers. But building off what Dew said, Fannie and Freddie do set the 'standard' for the loans they will buy. If the standard is lower banks can lend to more people because Fannie and Freddie will buy the loan. If they wouldn't buy the mortgage the interest would be higher.
A lot of people believe the govt put more and more pressure on Fannie on Freddie to lower their standards.

just a hype to get people to get new cars....
i know a good many prolly dont lost thier job by now and are prolly going ot get thier new car repo'ed and thier credit will suffer.
they'll wish they could have kep thier old PAID OFF clunker.
