EcoBoost causing problems!
#11
First look at a ford forum and found this
"I have had it to the dealer 3 times for both sooty tailpipe and shuddering hesitation, to no avail (there was also a traction control light issue which was fixed with replacement of the airbag module). Worse yet, the mileage towing my travel trailer drops to between 8.3 and 8.8 mpg (GVW on TT is 7,500 but I most often tow it at around 6,200-6,500 lbs)... more than a 50% decrease! Towing my 12 ft utility trailer at 1,250 lbs and 11.5 mpg is almost as bad. I have not personally observed black smoke from the tailpipe, but have had reports from friends following me that any time I hit a hill it will puff smoke on the downshift, and then if it downshifts again into 4th (kicking rpm up to 2,500) it blows a constant faint black vapor trail all the way up the grade. For the record, pulling power is just fine- it will pull/hold my trailer at 65 over any grade I've been over.
I am convinced that the truck is running rich, likely because of a lack of boost (possibly because one of the turbos is not spooling up properly) but have no way to know with no boost pressure guage. My local dealer's service manager is in agreement that something is not right, but they cannot find anything specifically wrong (no faults under testing). The Ford tech hotline states that a certain amount of smoke is normal, especially under load. I think this is BS. On a diesel maybe, but not on a brand new, broken in gasoline engine with proper system operation.

It looks like they just pour the fuel to it for boost?
When i first put my cam in and threw a tune in to get me by, when it would get in boost it would do the same thing as above.
I put the cam in and that next weekend i hooked to a 16 or 18' enclosed trailer. Got something crazy like 8-9mpg in the first leg of the trip. Truck ran like crap.
adding something like 10* timing and leaning out the AFR at the 85kPa-140kPa fixed all the issues and picked up 5-6mpg.
I bet if they had a good tuning software for Fords they could dial in their tunes and get good mileage.

Well I think I am gonna chirp in and tell you guys about my eccoboost fail. I bought a 2013 ford escape 1.6L. After getting steady 21/25 mpg I took to the internet for answers. It would appear the 2.0 is the better option. The 1.6L 4wd has a steep 3.51 final drive. The fwd is 3.21 and the the 2.0 has 3.07. In most cases the 2.0 is getting better real world mileage than the 1.6. Surprise surprise. Less effort to keep it moving and lower highway rpms. I am disappointed I chose the 1.6 as I was told it would save me on gas. Now I get worse mpg and gave up almost 100hp. The 21/25 isn't too much to complain about but I expected at least 23/28 with a 30 tank in perfect conditions.

After all the problems that my buddy has gone through he is getting a NEW ecoboost put in, the old one had a piston broken and once he gets it fix he will trade it in for a 5.0L F150

The little part in my brain that was raised to hate Ford's is always a little happy to hear of things like this, but the inner gearhead inside is sad to see nice people waste money on , what is otherwise, a very nice truck. I even like the look of the newer models, especially the Raptors without the giant FORD grille and graphics.
I have always hated the 4.6/5.4L motors in them though and this ecoboost sounds even worse.
