If I end up swapping cams when I build my turbo kit I'll make sure it doesn't have any of these problems and let y'all know. I probably have about 10-15k miles on the Lunati.

just a FYI COMP bought Lunati several years ago so probably using the same cores.

also here is a thread I was apart of on ls1tech with lots of comp issues mainly a loud whine from very fine chatter marks on brand new cams.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...change-20.html

having the cam polished fixed everything.

CAM motion is who diagnosed the problem with the chatter and offered to polish anyone's who would send it to him to find out.

My next CAM will be from CAM motion

yikes, . . . whining after a cam change, that would lead to bad cam bearings later on

Looks like Comp Is using the cheap cores again... There is only a 3 core company's that make the cam blanks.

BTW there not plane steel cam Blanks, there a forging but there something like Grey Iron.

And for the record, Lunati was bought up by Holley, Not Comp Cams. Holley later sold them to invest Group. Lunati History - Lunati Power

I've only seen this with dual springs if that makes a difference.

I just got off a chat with Comp here is what they had to say:

Chris D.: I just installed a compcam and have been reading more and more about flaking cam lobes... should i be worried
Chris D.: https://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...-527854/page2/
Chris D.: I have the specs from the cam if that helps at all
Matthew Maxwell: Ok, which cam do you have?
Chris D.: part number 54-000-11
2014-03-27 10:43
Matthew Maxwell: Ok, typically the flaking lobes comes from improper oil being used, especially with the more aggressive cam lobes.
Matthew Maxwell: Your intake lobe is aggressive, so you would need to be sure and run a good quality racing oil. Mobil 1 doesn't cut it.
Chris D.: oh **** thats what it has in it now
Chris D.: only a hundred miles though
2014-03-27 10:45
Matthew Maxwell: Yeah, that's what a lot of guys run. Something like valvoline VR-1 is better. Driven oil for the LS engines is the best.
Chris D.: Damn i had never heard that before
Matthew Maxwell: The factory lobes are a softer ramp profile, so Mobil 1 is fine. But the more aggressive lobes and higher spring pressures require something with more ZDDP.
2014-03-27 10:46
Chris D.: amsoil work?
2014-03-27 10:49
Matthew Maxwell: I believe amsoil would be ok. I would suggest calling their tech line to make sure you get the right type.
Matthew Maxwell: Here is a link to the Driven: Driven LS30 5W-30 Next Generation Synthetic
Chris D.: Ok is there anything i should tell Amsoil in particular to make sure i get the right type?
2014-03-27 10:51
Matthew Maxwell: Here is a bulletin driven put out specifically about LS cams: GM LS Hydraulic Roller Cam Bulletin | Driven Racing Oil
2014-03-27 10:52
Matthew Maxwell: Not sure, I hope Amsoil has a specific one for high performance LS engines.
Matthew Maxwell: That is why I would call them.

Thoughts? Should I order this special kind of oil? Im running beehive springs atm

Talked with Amsoil and this is they oil the recommend that is comparable to the Driven oil listed above...

I recently pulled out a very early EPS grind cam and one of the lobes was damaged. Im guessing another faulty comp grind. Lifters showed no signs of failure when i had them out.

Any weight to the oil argument guys? Or are they sidestepping on the blame?
