Default Gas Savers/Daily Driver options

Ok, I don't know when I will be able to do this, but I want to get some ideas for a gas sipping daily driver. Last time I checked my mileage outta my '01 5.2L Ram, I got 8.8mpg. I know most of that was my right foot, but regularly it only gets 12 around town, best I've gotten was 16.6 all highway. My Camaro with an LS1/4L60E will get 22 with me driving it like I stole it, but I've invested too much into it to park around idiots (most college students don't know how to park and don't care either). Does anyone know anything I might could do to the Dodge to get better? Anyone tried those hydrogen kits?

On a similar note and main reason for this tread: What would be a good sporty daily driver that gets great gas mileage? I'd also like to have decent people space, so I'm thinking about either a sedan or wagon. I'm 6'1", so I don't think a sub-compact would be good for me. So far I've been thinking about something along the lines of a Nissan Altima SE-R or just regular SE, Nissan Maxima SE, Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Pontiac G8 GT. I'm also open to other suggestions along these lines. Feel free to post up what you daily drive and any mods.

Thanks

Well, you can ditch the 20's to something lighter, get ahold of some electronic radiator fans (about 3 mpg on my avalanche) an intake and exhaust will get you 1 maybe 2, and a eco tune.

Have you calculated the cost of a car payment, insurance, and vehicle maintenance vs the gas savings over your current vehicle?

As I said, it'll be a little bit before I will be able to do this, as in probably at least a year and a half, which should be when I graduate college; I just wanted to see what y'all use as daily drivers. As for the car payment, I don't believe in them because I'm of the mindset that if I don't have the money in the bank for it, then I don't need it right now. I'm just trying to get an idea of what I should be looking for when the time is right. And thanks for the tips for the truck. Don't know if I'll lose the 20s as I just got them this past summer, but hopefully I'll be able to try the fans, intake, and tuner this summer.

+ 1 on all of that.

I think that the driving habits is the most effective one.

if you keep your foot in it a prius will suck gas. just do all thats been said and you will be fine on gas and come out with less extra costs like insurance car payment and more upkeep...

not quite the feedback i was expeciting...guess i need to be more clear. I do plan on doing the air filter, tuner, etc. already did cat-back exhaust.
I appreciate all the suggestions posted...

OK, guess I need to put it this way: If you had to pick between these vehicles, which would you pick: Nissan Altima SE-R or SE (2002-current), Nissan Maxima SE (2004-current), Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Pontiac G8 GT, Dodge Charger R/T or SRT-8, Chrysler 300C SRT8, Dodge Magnum? If you know of any other cars that might fit into this group, post up. I'm just doing this as a feeler to get an idea which would be more reliable/best bang for buck etc.

I had a dodge magnum with 3.5L. It got around 24mpg on hwy and handled the road great. I totaled out my magnum and got my 08 rcsb chevy 5.3L which gets about 22 on the avg right now since I updated my tune. Just a perf tune, cai, and muffler on heavy 22's. I imagine the charger would get better mileage than the magnum would. Same interior tho pretty much. They are well built cars IMO. There will have to be some compromise on the mpg vs hp tho. Its just whatever you think you will be comfortable with.
