For summer carry, I'm all about the pocket wheelguns or mini-semi's. I don't have the coin to pick one up right now, but when I do it's probably gonna be the new Ruger LCR. I haven't heard of any of the fits like they had with the LCP, and I think its got some great amenities that are lacking on S&W pocket pistols.

Well there are a lot of good choices out there. I really like the sub compact Glocks (G26 and G27) and the subcompact XDs are nice as well. The hammerless 2" S&W and Taurus revolvers are nice. The Kahr PM9 is a very nice pocket 9mm.
FWIW, I'm not a fan of .32s or .380s. Get at least a +P .38 IMO.

Bought my wife a smith & wesson m&p 9c and it has now become my carry gun. It's a great shooting little gun. I would stay away from anything .380 as it's next to impossible to find ammo for right now and the ammo is way overpriced. For a first pistol I would go with a 9mm because it's easy to find ammo and relatively cheap to shoot. With a first pistol practice is everything to get used to how they work. You'll shoot more 9mm than 45 or 40 because you can buy more for the same money.

Don't limit yourself to the new fangled guns that everybody says you have to have. Nothing wrong with them if you like them, I own a Glock myself. But for that first gun at least try out a 1911 .45 before you purchase. Its the most proven defense handgun in the world.
