Default Holy Crap..

A ship struck a Container crane in the Port of Alabama last Thursday at 11:30AM.
This is a pretty horrific event..
while the ship was turning in the channel.. aparently the ship broke away from the tugs and while it was turning it struck the 2 front legs of the container ship..
what happened next is just awfull.
It scares the Bejesus out of me, as these are what I work on everyday..
I am a Maint. electrician for the Port of Houston Authority..
every maint guy has had the dream, after a few months of starting the job, that they are on the crane when it suddenly falls over..
I never thought I would actually see it..
it had always just been talked about..
any ways here is the aftermath...
There was only one fatality.. an electrician that was installing some equipment

what the container cranes look like, and how they operate..

whats left after the ship struck the crane..

It looks like a mess! I have a question though, why does every maint. guy have the dream of being on one of those and then it fall, for the thrill or something?

yep,
Sorry.. it's more of a nightmare than a dream...
but it's still in the back of your head..
I have been up top on ours, when it is working, and it can be a hair raising job...
feels like it could fall over at any time...

Damn thats is really bad. I saw that those containers were crunched like they were nothing and those bigass support beams were snapped over like toothpicks. That had to be a tremendous amount of force. What is Ocea doing about all of that?

by the way thunder, my uncle had an accident about 2 yrs ago here in houston, I used to drive/operate something similar but in way smaller size I believe, I think his has wheels or something??? well to make a long story short the container lifter or whatever its called lost pressure on the brake lines or something and he went right into the houston ship channel!! he said he was shitting bricks, he said he could not open the door to get out while he was under water due to all the pressure the water was pushing towards the cabin door, somehow he mangaged to barely open it while water was going in the cabin but still the cabin door was forcing the door close he was all the way out expect like 3 of his fingers were still trying to hold the door open when the door smashed his fingers and cut all three of them!! he just had to swim up to be able to get some fresh air quick, with alot of pain due to having 3 less fingers.... he was off for a while and then came back to work and they layed him off... I think that is some sorry *** ****.... I think he is suing the company or something, and I believe that company got into alot of trouble for not reporting the incident to OSHA or some other regulatory agencies....
