How to get rid of a tree stump
#21
The best way would be to rent a backhoe or find someone who has one. Most of the time you can just put the bucket on the far side of the stump and just tip it out toward you. Anything else will be a lot of work and or mess.

from an organic gardening website:
Stump Removal
For large stumps the best way is to hire an arborist to use a stump grinder. The second best choice is to cut the stump flush with the ground, drill large holes, more the better. Fill holes with sugar, fertilizer or buttermilk. Moisten thoroughly and cover with a thick blanket of mulch such as shredded tree trimmings.

Smoke Bombs!
FWIW, Home Depot caries "stump rot' which is just a potassium nitrate blend with some buffers. Find some potassium nitrate, drill some holes and pour it in. This will accelerate the rotting process. If you look at bags of fertilizer you will see numbers like this 30-8-16. You want to find the fertilizer with the highest last number and then the first number. That is of course if you can't find strait potassium nitrate (available in small quantities on the internet and at most gardening centers).

side note: I used to do this as a kid making smokebombs. Add a little sugar in a coke can and watch it smoke like crazy and the coke can become part of the street.
