Keep the AK or sell it and buy/build an AR15?

have a dpms ar15 for about a year now. love it. the ak's recoil is a pain to me for follow up shot accuracy and getting back on target after rapid fire. If you want to save SERIOUS money in ammo do like almost everyone does and get the cmmg .22lr conversion and pay 15 bucks at walmart for 550 rounds. It can be converted back and forth in about 5 seconds. U can get the conversion for 100 and a mag for 20 online at Botach right now. It pays for it self after the first box of .22's are shot
Which DPMS AR do you have? I've seen some online and locally for $650-750, is that one decent?
What's the difference in quality between buying an AR built already in the $7-800 price range (DPMS, Olympia Arms, Bushmaster), vs $7-800 in one I could build myself? Are the components the same or lesser quality on one that is already built? Is it worth the hassle to build one besides being able to pick all your own parts?

you can build a very quality ar for about the same price, but dpms warrantys for life now iirc. Yes mine is a flattop base carbine 16in with some things added by myself. dont buy olympia, or bushmaster. Stick with either dpms, Rock river arms, or if you want expensive colt. I have had no problems about 5000 federal .223 rounds now thru it, still 1.5in groups at 150 with a holo sight no magnification. I did the .22lr conversion to practice with, the gun stays the same so your tactical training and familiarity is the same. also you do not have to make scope adjustments with the conversion. just switch the bolt and mag when you want longer distances.

Since you've owned the base line DPMS for a year now, any regrets? Anything you can't do with that rifle vs others in that price range or slightly higher?

no regrets at all, and no this is the most versital firearm on the planet pretty much. you just cant make it a .308 if you get the .223, but there are other calibers that you can change to that are just as good, .... .416, check out the velocity and energy at 1000 yards lol

the whole point of the .22lr round is for when you want to blast off thousands of rounds it wont cost several hundreds of dollars, just about a hundred for 3300 rnds lol. Plus, for tactical training where total accuracy isnt needed it is great. dont take that as its not accurate, check out the youtube videos of them splitting cards with the .22 conversion. If you want big all you would have to do is throw the stock bolt back in and mag. or put the big boy upper on one, or switch to the fast shooting 9mm, or put a 6.8 upper on. there are many configurations this gun can do, and they are only multiplying.

AK all the way man. At best, the 223 puts out 1295lb-ft of energy at the muzzle. Hell, if thats all you want just buy an old 44 mag. I would stick with the AK simply due to knock down power, reliability, and AK's can be optioned out just as much as and AR15. Sure, the AR15 can print tighter groups, but a 9mm prints tighter groups than a .45. Now when is the last time someone said a 9mm overpowers a .45? The point is, at any given range, a properly set up AK will deliver more power than an AR15 ever will. Less of course you wish to buy an AR10.

And I bought a stripped lower receiver today, and also ordered a stock and lower parts kit. I'll be purchasing the complete upper sometime in the next few weeks and putting it all together.
