I'll only be buying soft point and hollow point ammunition. 99% of ranges in the DFW area have banned all FMJ rifle ammunition, and the other 1% do not allow steel core surplus ammo. Unfortunately I am stuck having to go pay to shoot at a range, wish I had a bunch of land to go shoot at.

The Bear ammo is regarded as the best of the Russian stuff. I've shot thousands of rounds of it without a single failure. It's what I'd recommend. I can't comment directly on Tula as I haven't shot it. But it's reviews aren't nearly as good as the Barnaul stuff. It is cheaper by about $.50/20 though.

Silver bear last time I checked was $4.09/20 at CTD which is a good price. Hollow points or FMJ doesn't matter for plinking.
Alternatively, just buy the Yugo surplus 7.62x39. It's around $2.50/20 and is not steel core. The only downside is that it's corrosive....to combat that just **** inside the receiver and bore when you're done shooting

Brown bear is cheapest and works wonderfully.

Hopefully my AR likes shooting the russian crap, cause buying America can get a bit expensive for plinking.
