That's just starting pay for the RR, it will get keep raising, and the benefits, and pension of railroads are unbeatable.

Are Canada RR government ran also?

My vote is to do RR for a career and W&F as fun, keep it a passion you will learn to enjoy it more and not hate it.

How are the pensions in Canada as unstable as they are in the US? In the US, now is not the time to get a job based on pension promises.

Also if you go with the RR they may pay for you to go to school later in your career.

Having very little first hand knowledge of either industry limits how much advice I can give, but do what makes you happy.

Three years ago I left a management position to go into law enforcement. I still don't make as much money as I did before and I work crappy hours but I couldn't be happier.

Ya RR for sure. If you enjoy weld leave it as a hobby. They use your time off to weld what ever the hell you want, not some boring pipe in a plant, or handrails crap like that.

Like everyone else mentioned, take the RR job and leave the welding for your hobby/play time.

Take the RR job for sure. Talk to an older RR guy, and I am sure he will agree. Also talk to someone that has made a career of welding, and they will agree. I love to weld, and find it very relaxing. If I had to do it for a job for someone else I might feel differently. The welding job will always be there, if you pass up the RR job you will always feel like you missed the opportunity. Good luck either way you choose.
