Railroad = unionized, benefits, wicked pension, job security, honestly its not very hard work, lots of opportunity for overtime and advancement
Steel fab = union, some benefits, Ill have welding tickets, many different job opportunities, doing one of the things I love, monday-friday 8-4 or 9-5 job
And I wouldnt say I dont like doing it, its just not as interesting, little on the boring side

Having very little first hand knowledge of either industry limits how much advice I can give, but do what makes you happy.
Three years ago I left a management position to go into law enforcement. I still don't make as much money as I did before and I work crappy hours but I couldn't be happier.

Ya RR for sure. If you enjoy weld leave it as a hobby. They use your time off to weld what ever the hell you want, not some boring pipe in a plant, or handrails crap like that.

Take the RR job for sure. Talk to an older RR guy, and I am sure he will agree. Also talk to someone that has made a career of welding, and they will agree. I love to weld, and find it very relaxing. If I had to do it for a job for someone else I might feel differently. The welding job will always be there, if you pass up the RR job you will always feel like you missed the opportunity. Good luck either way you choose.
