mailing something to yourself only provides a timestamp for sending yourself an envelope. It is a myth, the poor man's patent. It is actually a myth within the copyright world (have a song writer friend). Thousands. It will costs thousands to patent. Get used to it, if you want it patented, talk to a patent attorney. If a normal attorney is willing to help, then he is only stealing your money. Get a specialist attorney in the world of patents. Sorry..know some people who get burned in this topic. Get an attorney if you are serious. And shop those attorneys, there are some bad ones out there.

Just a heads up. Most patent attorneys that you will talk to only deal with bigger well established companies. That was the jist I got. Good luck finding a good attorney and with your project.

There are different patents you can get. There are cheaper patents that just cover US, and there are world patents. All a patent does is gives you the ability to develop your product for 20 years. If you have the plans, I would have a notary sign them so they are dated. That will ensure you had the idea on a specific date, and if someone developed the idea later, you could prove that you had the idea at least on the date the notary signed it. The majority of the cost for the patent is for making sure that the idea has not already been developed. You can do the leg work on this yourself. You can go to a patent office, and begin looking, or even look online. I would get a working prototype just to make sure it works. And believe it or not, the hardest part of a patent is to think of a NEW idea. Most everything has already been thought of. Don't get discouraged if you have the same idea someone else has already thought of.

on an unrelated project to mine, my mom sent in a patent application for a design my dad came up with. the fee was $250 i think, and you dont find out what the actual patent fee is untill they process it. it all depends on the industry, application, design etc.

I went through all of this and used legalzoom, had great support and the price wasnt bad, right around 1200 with drawings, provisional patent, patent search with a nice hardcopy book of all patents that are similar and pretty well organized. Careful with the provisional patent and attempting to sell the idea or anything, its still your idea at that point but its easy for any larger company to win by drawing out court hearings and such. If you have a good idea there are people that work at larger companies that search for ideas and will contact you interested in what you have, I know thats what I dealt with good luck-
