check out the XD series, as well as Kahr. For a small carry .45 Kahr has the smallest .45 available I believe. The PM series is a great carry choice, single stack mags so it's slim, only downside is the mag capacity lacks a little.
The Smith&Wesson M&P series is also a very quality piece. The .40c is a great shooting gun that conceals well. check'em out, they are worth a look.

Personally I have found .40 to be more favorable for carry for a couple reasons. Main reason being .40 is generally easier to conceal due to being a slimmer gun. I have both .45 and .40 that I carry and it always seems I go for the .40 due to it being more comfortable to carry. JMO though. I had a P89 at one point and wasn't crazy about it, I have a Springfield XD and XDM and love both of them. As mentioned above cant go wrong with a 1911 .45 but they are also a bit large for concealed carry and heavy. I also swear by my 1911 but dont generally carry it due to its size. I favor Sig, springfield, some taurus, kimber and H&K.

Why is that?
IMO the 1911 is one of the worst guns for concealed carry due to weight and large size. It is an awesome gun but unless you spend some real coin on them they dont shoot nearly as well as a "cheapo" 500 buck SA XD. I carry a SA SCXD 40, cant beat it for size and punch that it carries. Basically I agree with 03sierraslt, and I carry mine in a SOB holster so I dont have to wear a jacket.

But its... beautiful
Yea a bit unwieldy, and more of a collector piece, than something to always have with you as a cc.

The leather presses against your back so you dont have anything gouging you and the clip clips on your belt so it does fall down your pant leg. The barrel faces down at a 45* angle. Its the most comfortable holster IMO unless youre driving but if Im driving somewhere far I jsut take the holster out and toss it in the door pocket.
1K is not out of line at all for a good pistol and that gun. The 1911 is an awesome gun. There is no doubt its reliability and knock down power are hard to beat. Just IMO theyre not that great for concealed carry especially someone who isnt huge. Im a skinny bastard so I need a smaller gun so I can hide it more effectively.
My gun is a polymer gun, please dont tell me youre one of those who looks down these "cheapo" "plastic" guns.
