Glad you guys like the pictures. Biggest engine I've worked on was rated at 79,000 HP and everything was bigger proportionally. These pistons were more or less 2 feet wide while pistons on the bigger engines range between 3.5 - 4 feet in diameter. Should be noted that these pistons produce their power due to Stroke length and not Bore size. Torque on these engines are over a million.
with that low of RPM, I can't even imagine the torque numbers

They run on Diesel when we are in port or coastal waters as it's the cleaner burning fuel and run on HFO (Heavy Fuel Oil) or Bunker C when out at sea. The last two fuels are the last of the last refining process when refineries separate out all the different fuels. Actually the last one is Asphalt. Anyways HFO and Bunker C is some Heavy *** ****. When it's cold you can actually walk on it, it's consistency is similar to cold tar. They have to heat it up to 120-140 degrees Celsius to get it hot enough and viscous enough to pump it around and into the engine.
Not sure if you guys remember a ship that ran aground in Oregan that the Navy tried to blow up? They set off mulitple types of explosives in an attempt to destroy it or light the fuel on fire but they failed until finally they used Napalm to ignite the fuel. The thing burned for a few days. Burning Cold HFO or Bunker C is similar to attempting to make a candle explode.
