those are suppose to make big holes? Please...
Picking your first handgun is an experience.
I fell in love with the XD, i borrowed one and put about 500 rounds thru it.
It pointed natural, fit my hands and i was able to shoot it pretty good first time out.
You can listen to the guys that swear by Glocks, 1911s, Revolvers, XDs, M&Ps. all that yada.
but it all comes down to what fits you.
Revolvers like KY said are very reliable. they loose the "Cool Factor" but by golly they are proven and i now carry one.
Just find some friends that have guns and go see what you like.
If you were closer i wouldnt mind letting you blast away with any of mine to see what you liked..
Do research and buy the right one the first time
My XDs are .40s and my Ruger LCR is a 38SPL.
My Service Model XD has well over 12000 rounds thru it now, i shoot it in competitions and i carry it.

You can always get a 357mag and shoot 38spls out of it or a 44mag and shoot 44spl out of it..
My dad has a Ruger super blackhawk in 44mag and its a handfull with some 300gr XTPs. He carries it with him everywhere. nothing is safe within 100 yards. Ive seen him take deer with it out to 125yds.

Haha thanks for all the good answers so far.
I am definitely going to get a semi-auto, not a big fan of revolvers and my dad has a .357mag revolver I could shoot if I ever planned on using one.
So far, I really like the looks of the 1911 and the XD40.
What are your thoughts on this Taurus barretta? I've always liked how they look as well.

my roomate just bought a s&m 357 m 8 shot from there performance center it is a amazing gun. insanely smooth very accurate. 357 ammo is alittle costly but 38 ammo is pretty cheap it. it also comes with Picatinny rails on it. he paid around $1300 for it
