I dont have any experience with those, but ive heard alot of people hate them, but then again ive heard some like them... If your asking me, i vote for the XD if it fits you.

I never liked revolvers either until i got this Ruger LCR. its fun to shoot and theres no reason not to carry it everyday. Its 15.5 ounces loaded with 110gr +P Corbons.

That's a Taurus PT92, it's their clone of the Beretta 92FS. I have limited experience with them but they're nice pistols and if you get one in 9mm they are real easy shooting due to their weight. Go check some gunshops and see what feels good in your hand and falls in your price range. You can't go wrong with a Glock 17 or 19, a Springfield XD or an FN FNP-9.

I would suggest you stick with 9mm, some of the more exotic magnums aside pistols are puny under powered pop guns and the difference between 9mm and .40 is negligible. 9mm is also usually easier to find and always cheaper. Here 100 rounds of FMJ 9mm is $20, 100 rounds of .40 is $28 and 100 rounds of.45 is $30.

What's the difference in stopping power between 9mm/.40 vs .45? Would it be worth it to step up to the bigger caliber or would I be sacrificing too much confort/control/accuracy for the added power?

Scott,

If your using your gun for home defense don't get anything under a .40 cal
I know your a skinny little sh*t and whatnot but you can handle it!

I wish i wouldve known you were getting into guns man. You need to come out to the range with us sometime!
I always carry my little POS High Point .40 in the truck. I dont care if it gets banged around. As long as I hit ya with one your going down for sure!

The one that I use thats fun for the range is a Colt .45 officer edition that my dad got when he left the military in 88 and passed it on to me.

I have a buddy with a few XD40's and those are alot of fun to shoot as well.

We need to go to cabelas! hahaha

Scott, if it were me, and this is just personal experience, but I'd steer clear of the Taurus's. The newer ones may be much better, but I've owned 2 in the past. The first was a Taurus .380. Don't remember the model #, it was a great little gun, but after putting several hundred rounds thru it, it developed a nasty little habit of jamming near the last 3 or 4 rounds every mag.

Then I had a Taurus PT945--.45. Again, a great gun. It also jammed every once in a while, not near as often as the .380, but I could never get the thing completely sighted in. I bought it used, so I don't know if someone else abused it before me, but...... I know I will never personally own another Taurus.

I personally like the 9MM and .40 cals. I'll take a little less stopping power for a more accurate weapon, but thats just me. I've got a .40, but my next handgun will most certainly be a H&K USP 9MM.

Well I would tell you to buy a nice hand gun but since its your first gonna prolly get beat up, I would go with a hi point 9mm That was my first one couldnt hurt it at all only cost me 150 brand new ammo was cheap and really easy to clean, and for home defense your gonna have 9 in the mag one in the chamber so 10 bullets to waste the mother ***** plus 9mm bullets are the cheapest around here and if you do break it has lifetime warrenty

The difference is minimal. FWIW, the difference in circumference between a 9mm and a .45 is less than a tenth of an inch. Shot placement and the ability to deliver quick follow up shots is much more important than stopping power (which all three are short on).
