Default Thinking about buying a VOLT!

So...when I get home here in a few weeks, I'm gonna need a DD. My truck is currently in pieces in my garage waiting for a transplant. And although I could get it up and running in a week or so if need be, I'd rather not, and take my time with it and do it the way I want. So meanwhile I've decided on buying one of three different cars. What I've narrowed it down to are...

1) The new Chevy Volt
PRO:
-estimated 230 mpg! (although it doesn't take into account the $$ of electricity
-New Car with huge upside
-Looks fantastic
-Could be cheap as hell to actually use as a car in the city.
CON:
-Risky seeing that it's 1st generation
-No-one knows how they are gonna hold up to the real world
-I go skiing alot in the mountains, not sure how the electric car would manage.
-I do alot of long distance drives, about 40% of my annual mileage.
-Automatic only
-Re-sale value is...

2) 2010 Audi A3 TDI
PRO:
-On hwy cruise it gets 50 mpg
-Always wanted an Audi as they are my favorite cars.
-Looks good IMO and appearance mods make them look better!
-Lots of room for luggage and friends
-The most luxurious of the three
-Great re-sale value
CON:
-Most expensive
-Only offered in FWD at this moment
-Only a semi-automatic gearbox, no manual

3) 2009 VW Jetta TDI
PRO:
-On hwy cruise it gets 50 mpg
-Great re-sale value
-If de-badged and done right it could look decent
-Cheapest
-Offered in a Manual
CON:
-Although I don't mind them I'm not a massive fan of VW's
-Not as much luggage room as the Audi
-No AWD option which would be great in the mountains.

Sooo, obviously mpg is a big thing with me. I've averaged 8-9mpg for that last 5 years with my various trucks so this is a concern for me for my new DD. Idealy I'd like AWD and a manual but none of them really come with that with the exception of the Audi but I'd have to import that one from europe. I'd like to get the new Volt but there's so many 'what if's' about it that I'm hesitant to be one of the first ginuea pigs.
what do you guys think?

This is what I want when my truck is paid off..

I went with the VW. The Volt looks cool-ish, but for heavy highway mileage it just doesn't sound like it's ready yet. Hard to beat the mileage of the VW, while keeping decent styling and alot of comfort!

I like the Honda cr-v awd (V) seats will do some cool stuff & the back seats recline, comes with a picnic table in the back! I average 24mpg on highway with 4 guys & work gear! Comes with VSA that helps when offroading!

DSG A3 Audi! One of the best fwd cars I have got to flog, I mean test drive.

Honestly I would buy a TDI Golf, good mix of jetta and A3. However a used Subaru would be the best choice as far as a snow mobile.

I love the way the Audi's look but they price is up there. Have you looked at VW's website? They have a Jetta TDI Cup Edition that looks pretty nice, doesn't look that pricey.

Either way I'd go the TDI

i voted vw.... granted the audi is badass but is pricey... now if money is not that important then def. go with the audi but in a all around vehicle the vw is def worth the money and all around comparisons and of course u can clean it up a little and look sweet and im sure there is some kinda tuning u can do to the tdi just for a little pep imo

edit: and i agree with your comments on the volt, there's not enough real time usage and dd yet... Of course they have "tested" them but in the real world it's diff. the styling looks bad *** but im just skeptical on the electric technology in a dd car or any vehicle.... just my 0.2

is the audi and vw tdi the same motor? I like TDI's, my wife had an 05 manual jetta tdi that got 45mpg's with a 50/50 mix. the only thing I personaly would try to avoid is timing belt cars. I hate timing belts. but thats just me. the TDI's have a 100k mile timing belt, or used too anyway. if you were 100 city I would say volt. and as far as a manual gearbox goes, the 6 speed trans that vw, and audi has are nice imo.
