Richard, how long do u think u can go back to living there? Cause w/. cleanup efforts, prolly running round the clock, it'll be chaotic at best & noisy.
Or is it just business as usual til ya tidy up your roof & get new windows?

It's really cool that volunteers like u & others (sprayed denali) wanna help when ya can.

I have quite a bit of family in Decatur and one of my cousins is a lead nurse in Decatur General. Her stories are sad. She said the hospital the first 2 days looked like a war zone triage. Blood every where and no lights besides EM lighting. Our family is safe and I guess "lucky" they live in the same power grid as Decatur General so their power has been restored (priority grid). I feel useless, completely useless, utterly useless looking at those pics, listening to my cousin's stories, watching the news...I just can't fathom being their and not being able to do anything. I am glad you and every one of our southern brothers and sisters are okay. Keep us up to date if you need to post any volunteer links or gatherings or need to post announcements.

I think it's sad that there's so much looting going on in the US after disasters strike an area. Everytime something happens you always hear about looting and burglaries. Was interesting to read the news stories coming out of Japan after their disasters that there wasn't much looting at all.

Luckily im in Trussville which had the storm go right over it but for some reason it lifted off the ground as it went over us.

yeah, trying to help out is hard because, like Mitch said, people have everything so chaotic that you cant get in to help. i went to a local town Pratt city (which before this is a part of town i would NEVER go to) and helped clean up Saturday. pictures show incredible destruction but until you are actually walking down the streets you don't realize how bad it is. You pass child's toys, shoes, obvious personal belongings, houses that are merely a foundation, keys, cars upside down, and plenty of other heartbreaking things. its quite incredible and very sad also.

One thing that will really open your eyes is when you pass one of the houses that are still standing and the people on the front porch sitting telling stories and laughing. I guess after you live through something as horrible as these people did you look at life a little different and are thankful for the small things.

My sister in law is a surgical nurse at Decatur Gen. and lives in the hospital zone. I'm 2 miles away, just outside the zone but we got our power back Sun.

You boys in 'Bama are some good guys w/. big hearts. Way to pitch in. If ya ever find yourself up here, I'd hang out w y'all. I'll show ya some southern hospitality, Northern style.

Just don't ask to drive my truck.

Tho I may let the right someone --> (.)(.) or your truck has to be faster so that I can drive it. If you've blown up your truck, all bets are off tho. Sorry Richard, motors count too.

Yeah isn't it a shame? From what I read they were doing nothing but trying to help each other, not profit from their neighbor's misfortune. One of the news highlights was the fact that amidst all the famine and dehydration, they didn't touch the vending machines. That speaks a lot for what kind of society it is. Its good to hear about people helping out in Alabama, but the amount of profiteering going on as well is just sickening.
