I've been using AVG free on my laptop for years, switched to Microsoft Security Essentials on my desktop.
With the new AVG, if you want to run combo fix (fairly common cleanup tool), you have to uninstall AVG, which also requires a special tool, so I just made the switch, seems to work just as well.

I've been using Avira, friend recommended it and it has done an awesome job on my very expensive computer keeping it clean from everything.
Also, what I'm using is free, so that's also a plus.
However, if you're already stuck in virusland, I recommended Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. If you run that, I gurantee that anything harmful on your computer is gonna say bye-bye, as it is the end all to pretty much every bit of malware out there. It's what I use when I fix other peoples computers/ my old computer got completely infested with the worst of the worst (rootkit), and still took it out with the help of a couple other tools.
So those two things are what I recommend. If you have the money though, I'd take NOD32 over Avira, but depends on if you want to cough up dough.

Combofix won't run on 64bit systems though
