+1 Cramming is the only way that I can study. My short term memory is horrid, so If I study more than a day or so before the test I'll forget everything. FWIW I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday. My long term memory on the other hand is really good so studying for exams hurts me more than it helps.

I have a gauge for that

I found my point of diminishing marginal return on studying which allowed me to find out how long before I test I needed to study and realize that any additional unit of studying would yield less than 1 additional unit of increased score....so basically I learned to not stress over studying which lead to my actual studying time being more productive. It took me 3 years of college to figure that out
As for actual studying....I am a big visual leaner, so I will make study sheets using 3 or 4 different colors divided into sections and categories...

It's called your brain creating pathways for you to be able to store and recall information over extended periods of time. I'm talking about "real world" tests, whether it be professional licensing exams or promotional exams such as what the OP is talking about. I'm not sure what exactly is on his promotional exam but I would guess it will be concepts that his employer will expect him to know and implement in every day business. If you want to keep excelling, you won't cram for that. It's called actually learning.
Google it.

Well like i said in my first post every person learns differently. I can't study for weeks on end because i will forget the material. My method works for me. I didn't say it works for everyone. Just letting the OP know what works for me which is the question he originally asked.

To the OP, the ONLY way to actually learn something for longer than the duration of the test (which is what your employer will want) is to actually study the material long term.

You cant cram for every test. Been there, tried that.
If u have 4 months start now. Find the book read it, do the quizes. I often verbalize a lot of the **** im reading, seems to help retain them. Especially picky stuff like 100+ drug names etc.
Read it, understand why it works like it does. There are also ways to read stuff that makes u repeat, like read chapter one today. Tomorrow, read chapter 1 and 2. Then 123 the next day, then 234 the next day , then 345 each day, so each chapter, or section is hit. I dont like it, I like to go in order, straghtforward.

If you recently got out of the military then this may be the easier way to explain it to you. Treat that test like you would a drill test. Did your DI's teach you everything at once? No. They taught you over a period of time repeating everything time and time again. Just break it down bit by bit and you'll do just fine.
Oh, and by the way, Thank you for your service.
