Default 05 Yukon XL 5.3 (vin Z) to LQ4/9 swap w/ E85...

Hope someone can shed some light here...

A friend has a 05 Yukon XL, flex fuel 5.3 with the infamous cracked 706 heads. We're replacing the engine (knocks like hell now) and the guy wants to drop in a LQ4 or LQ9 instead of another 5.3 since he tows a camper often.

I know the engine swap itself is straight forward, there won't be any problems there.

The question is in the tuning... if we keep the old 5.3's E85 fuel system (injectors and all), can the tuning be easily done (i.e.- mail order) so that the LQ4/9 will run on either gas or E85 like the 5.3 did? Can the stock vin Z injectors (~35# correct?) keep up with fueling a basically stock 6.0 with E85?

I've searched and read other threads where 5.3s were swapped for 6.0s and all that was needed was a mail order tune. BUT, here i want E85 operation to be factored in.

Thanks.

If your keeping the 6.0 stock then I think the 5.3 flex fuel injectors will be fine. Any one of the sponsors will be able to get you a tune lined out no problem.

Yep, itll work fine, just need a tune. Actually, you could use the 5.3 intake as well if its a 01-07 6.0, so you dont have to touch injectors or anything.

You may want to go to an 06 operating system that has a VFFS and no longer requires a flex fuel sensor. I think I have seen a 6.0L VFFS calibration

Flex fuel has plenty of fuel pump and injector for a 6L.

When the fuel composition sensor goes out on the "Z" Tahoe, unplug the sensor and turn of the SES light in the tune like I did lol. You cant run E85 anymore but that sensor was $600 last time I checked.

2006 runs a Virtual Flex Fuel Sensor that is part of the calibration and does not require a sensor on the fuel line.
Scrap the $600 sensor and run the VFFS calibration for an 06

Well that would be cool but, I have yet to see an E85 pump in my life. So, I don't worry too much about it.

I haven't seen a pump with E0% in it in about 15 years. E10 requires tuning and E15 will for sure

There is one station in my town that sells 0 ethanol gas. He has a big red sign letting everyone know. That's where I get all my gas. He's also the only guy to carry 92. Everyone else in 91.
